NYT Innovation Report: Disruptive Innovation


Earlier this week Mashable published online a leaked internal report addressing innovation at the New York Times. This report is an excellent example of Christensen’s disruptive innovation in action, clearly defining the concept, demonstrating how disruptors can creep up on incumbents and the difficulties of responding to the threat. The report captures the strategic shock of the NYT moving from seeing other quality broadsheets as their main competitors and news web sites, such as Huffington Post and Buzzfeed, as glorified amateur blogs, to realising that the websites had progressively professionalised, overtaken the NYT in online readership and are enjoying significant operational, marketing and cost advantages.
